Telecare, Telehealth and Telemedicine

The only way to make care provision sustainable?

What Are They?

Telecare, telehealth and telemedicine all improve access to care, improve patient outcomes and reduce staff travel costs. This is all done through connecting patients to their care staff using technology. It allows care staff to provide a reactive model of care rather than a prescriptive one and so deliver better care to the people that need it most.

Over 50% of care staff travel more than 4 hours a week between appointments with patients. This creates a huge cost for care providers but also stops care workers from delivering care to other patients who may need their help even more.

What Do They Mean?

Telecare - Telecare is most commonly seen as a pendant alarm. These allow patients to call a support worker in a call centre who can assess the situation and then call an ambulance.

Telehealth - Generally this will be automatic medical monitoring of patients using sensors in order to make a diagnosis.

Telemedicine - Telemedicine connects patients to care staff so that remote consultations can be made and conditions diagnosed.

Why Should I Care About Them?

  • Peace of mind for patients
  • Improved access to care
  • Staff spend less time traveling
  • Staff spend more time caring
  • There are already 1.7 million telecare users in the UK
  • Patients prefer it

The Big Problem With Remote Care

Telecare and telehealth are often touted as the solution to every problem faced by care workers today. The issue is that telehealth and telecare are simply not personal. It is difficult to really care for a patient when everything is automated and you are trying to understand their needs just using data on a chart. So many of the most important signs are lost. As a care worker, you know that you can learn so much more from a patient by having a chat with them and seeing how they look than by looking at a graph.

Even in triaging patients via their vital signs it becomes much more difficult to understand the needs of a patient without seeing them face to face. This means there is still a need to deliver prescriptive care rather than reactive care even with all the telehealth devices that a patient may have.

All this boils down to the fact that to care for a patient it is all about having a human interaction.

Effect of Integration on Communication

The three stages of remote care. Evolving from alarms and monitoring in the 80's and 90's to remote consultations today.

Telecare has existed since the 80’s when alarms were used to alert care staff. We then saw active monitoring of conditions using data using telehealth. Now remote care is about higher level interactions and having a meaningful connection to your patients.

Why Patients and Staff Prefer Remote Care

Remote care can clearly make huge differences to your organisation as well as to patient's lives. Partly this is due to the cost savings and partly because it provides patients with better care. However, it is imperative that care staff can deliver care that patients need while still making the savings on travel time that telemedicine allows. By making these savings a care provider can save over £4000 per patient per year in staff travel costs.

Alongside the pure savings in travel remote care has been shown to reduce admissions to hospital and reduce mortality rates by 45%! Even more important, patients prefer it too.
